Dear Friends,
The intention of this blog post is to familiarise the greatest devotees of God. All are great Bhaktas of their time and through their life they taught us how to devote to God.
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa once said,
"The goal of human life is to love God, Bhakti is the one essential thing. To know God through jnāna and reasoning is extremely difficult."
All the great Bhaktas were also reading about other Bhaktas lived before them. From their life, they knew the essence of the devotion and got ability to differentiate right and wrong devotional ideas.
In order to get God's blessing, we have to understand what attitude we should kept towards God in our life. Attitude towards the God is the basic thing, and if it is correct, then we will surely reach the lotus feet of the God.
Kindly note, the order in which we present the Bhaktas are just based only on the period they lived.
Narada Muni
Narada Muni is a Brahmarshi and great Bhakta of Lord Vishnu. He travels to the distant worlds with Veena singing the glories of Lord Vishnu. Narada Bhakti sutra written by him is one of the important texts in Bhakti Yoga. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa once said, the path of Bhakti prescribed by the Narada Muni is the best to realise God in Kali Yuga.
Prahlada
Prahlada is a Asura king but a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. From his very childhood itself he had a great devotion to Lord Vishnu. His loving devotion to Lord Vishnu is considered to be an ideal of pure Bhakti.
Radha
Radha is chief consort of Lord Krishna and an incarnation of Lakshmi Devi. She is the chief among the Gopis. Her love for Krishna is spontaneous and of an esoteric nature devoid of any sexual desire. She is the perfect embodiment of Prema bhakti. From her life she shows how one should love Satchidananda.
Hanuman
Hanuman is a divine Vanara and son of Vayu. He is the greatest devotee of Lord Rama. His famous devotion for Lord Rama is present in Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Puranas. He is one of the chiranjivis and surrendered his entire life to the feet of Lord Rama.
Dhruva
Dhruva is a famous devotee of Lord Vishnu. He performed severe austerity in his small age and blessed by the divine vision of Lord Vishnu. When Lord appears before him, he did not ask for any worldly or heavenly desires but he only prayed for Pure Knowledge. His innocent nature and the great penance made him polar star among the other stars in the universe.
Markandeya
Markandeya is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He is a venerable sage among all sects of Dharmic traditions. When Yama tried to take away Markandeya's life, Compassionate Lord appeared before him and killed Yama to rescue Markandeya from the Death. In another story he attained a very rare knowledge of Maya, the great illusion by Lord Vishnu's blessing.
Ambarisha
Ambarisha was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Even though he was a king of immensely powerful kingdom, he always kept an attitude of humble servant towards the Lord. He used to perform the great Ekadashi Vrata to please the Lord Vishnu. He had a constant remembering of Lord Vishnu through out his life and received blessing from the Lord. Lord Vishnu gave Sudarshana Chakra for his devotee's protection.
Uddhava
Uddhava, the great Devotee of Lord Krishna, was a very close friend, adviser and a close companion through out the life of Lord Krishna. He was one of the very rare devotees who had the blessing of the Lord to be a constant companion. He had a great loving devotion towards Lord Krishna from his very childhood and joined to the Lord after Kamsa nigraha. He blessed to know the Lord Krishna as Avatara. Lord Krishna sent him to Gopis to show him the great devotion to Lord Krishna, Maha Bhava, which is the rarest of rare. When he showed the signs of unbearable pain of Lord's separation, Lord gave instructions for his spiritual progress in the form of Uddhava Gita and blessed him.
Sudama (Kuchela)
Sudama was a great bhakta of Lord Krishna. He was a childhood friend and schoolmate at Sandeepani Maharshi's school. Sudama was a very poor Brahmin and led a humble lifestyle. He enriched his poor life with KrishnaBhakti. In his life he never requested Lord for any material wealth but Lord given him everything by knowing the heart of his devotee. His life story is an example of Lord Krishna's mercy on his devotees.
Shuka
Shuka deva was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. He was the one who narrated Srimad Bhagavatha Mahapurana to king Parikshit for his Moksha. He is believed to be a divine parrot who heard great Bhagavatha from Lord Shiva. Later by the blessing of Lord Vishnu Shuka deva born as the son of Veda Vyasa in the human form. He was a wandering liberated soul who is completely unconscious of his body and frequently found to be immersed in Nirvikalpa Samadhi.
Mirabai
Mirabai was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. She considered herself to be a Gopi of Vrindaban, mad only with pure love for Krishna. Through her poetry she expresses her longing and seeking for union with Sri Krishna. The fragrance of her Prema Bhakti attracted many to the path of Bhakti Yoga. Mirabhai's poems are full of devotion and divine love for the Lord.
Tulsidas
Tulasidas was a great devotee of Lord Rama. From his early childhood, he shown his devotion towards Lord Rama. He later become a very famous poet and written Ramcharitmanas in local language to make the Story of Rama accessible to general public. Due to his ardent devotion, Lord Rama given his vision to him.
Jayadeva
Jayadeva was a Great Vaishnava Devotee. He is famous for his epic poem, Gita Govinda which is based on the Gopi's love for Lord Krishna. The poem is based on Gopi's loving devotion towards Lord Krishna especially Radha's relationship with Lord Krishna.
Vilwamangalam Swamiyar
Vilwamangalam Swamiyar is an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna, Guruvayoorappan. He led a life of a worldly man and he had single minded loving relationship with his partner later he turned his whole mind towards the feet of Guruvayoorappan and blessed with Lord Krishna's vision in the form of mischievous little boy. His eventful life story is very popular among Vaishnava Bhaktas.
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was great devotee of Lord Krishna. He is considered as the combined form of Lord Krishna and Radha. He was a great vaishanava saint who popularised chanting of Hare Krishna Maha Mantra. His way of devotion was very special with singing the glories of Lord Krishna and dancing with devotees. He made a profound effect on Vaishnava Bhakti tradition and later followed by Vaishnava Bhaktas all around the world.
Prabhu Nityananda
Prabhu Nityananda was a great Devotee of Lord Krishna. He was a devotee and friend of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Compassionate Nithyananda Rama served the role of Guru in very distinctive way. He devoted his life to Lord Krishna with ecstatic songs and dances along with his spiritual master Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. They revived the Dharma in Eastern India in 15th century.
Poonthanam Nambudiri
Poonthanam Namboodiri was a great devotee of Lord Krishna, Guruvayoorappan. He was a famous devotional poet in Malayalam. He was the author of the very famous devotional poem Jnanappana which is written in Malayalam. Lord Krishna very much impressed by Poonthanam's humility and devotion. Once another famous Sanskrit scholar refused to accept Poonthanam Namboodiri's poem just because it is written in simple local language. Later, Lord said to the scholar, he preferred Poonthanam's genuine Bhakti over scholar's Vibhakti.
Ramprasad Sen
Ramaprasad Sen was a great devotee of Ma Kali. He was a famous devotional Shakta poet and Siddha. Under the guidance of his guru, he did severe austerity prescribed in Tantra to receive the vision of Ma Kali. Pleased by his ardent sadhana, Ma Kali blessed him with her divine vision. His poems are filled with his experiences of direct vision of Ma Kali. Later, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa's yearning for Ma Kali's vision got intensified by these poems.
Kamalakanta
Kamalakanta was a great devotee of Ma Kali. He was a famous devotional poet and yogi. Like Ramaprasad Sen, he also followed the path of Tantra and blessed with Mother Kali's vision. He composed many devotional songs about Ma Kali and spread his loving devotion towards Ma Kali. Hearing the songs of Kamalakantha and Ramaprasad Sen, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa instantly used to be in ecstatic mood and became absorbed in Divine Mother.
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was a famous great devotee of Ma Kali. His attitude towards Ma Kali was of Mother-Child relation. Due to the desperation of not getting the vision of Mother Kali, Sri Ramakrishna decided to end his life. When he tried to cut his head with sword, Ma Kali appeared before him. He blessed with uninterrupted vision of Ma Kali rest of his life. With Ma Kali's blessings, he attained the highest spiritual experience of a human being.
Bamakhepa
Bamakhepa was an ardent devotee of Maa Tara. He worshiped Maa Tara as his own mother. He performed severe yoga and Tantric sadhana in cremation grounds. Pleased by the devotion of child like Bamakhepa, Mother Tara granted her vision in her ferocious form and took him to her breast. Later he became spiritual head of Tarapith.
Gopaler Ma
Gopaler Ma was famous for her devotion to Lord Krishna in the form of Gopala, baby Krishna. She was a householder devotee of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Lord Krishna appeared before her as little Krishna, Gopala and gave uninterrupted visions through out days. Lord Krishna lived with her in her house and blessed her spiritual sadhanas. Later Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa told her that she fulfilled of her goal of her spiritual life.
